Craig founded White Design with fellow director Linda Farrow in 1998. He has 25 years' experience in architectural practice in the UK and Europe and has been involved in low energy and sustainable design since the 1980s.
A graduate of the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff, and the Architectural Association, London, his approach to design is innovative and grounded in a thorough understanding of practical delivery.
Craig is a Design Advice consultant with the Carbon Trust and works with dBERR on the Low Carbon Buildings Programme. Craig is also senior lecturer at the School of Planning and Architecture at UWE, where he teaches Integrated Environmental Design and Construction. Craig is a board member of the Timber Research and Development Association and is Chair of Wood for Gold, the government’s champion of timber buildings for the 2012 Olympics. He is a steering group member of the Technology Strategy Board and a trustee of Spike Island, the centre for contemporary art and design in Bristol.

A graduate in architecture and planning at the University of the West of England, William also draws on his earlier studies in building and civil engineering in Ghana in his role as an architectural technician at White Design. He has a wide knowledge of computer aided design, gained through varied project work in the leisure, housing and education sectors.

A graduate of landscape architecture at Leeds Metropolitan University, Kevin brings over 13 years’ experience to White Design. In previous roles, Kevin developed design strategies and landscape/visual impact assessments for sensitive and challenging sites across all sectors. He is particularly interested in projects where built form and landscape combine to create holistically sustainable environments.
Kevin's project work is now focused on The Oxford Academy, Bristol Zoo Gardens and primary school designs with a strong experiential and educational design emphasis.
As Directors' PA covering maternity leave, Jacqui assists the directors by managing their schedules, liaising with clients and contacts, producing documents and generally supporting all aspects of their work. She takes an active part in a number of office-wide activities, including facilitating CPD and training. Jacqui also has wide experience of contract and project administration in a range of engineering disciplines, having previously worked on projects in Kenya and Bahrain as well as across the UK.
A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, Rachel developed her interest in environmental design with an MSc in Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies at CAT and UEL. Since joining White Design in 2005, Rachel has combined her project management and research capability to lead several major projects and has also trained as a BREEAM Schools Assessor. Recent research schemes have focussed on the calculation of embodied energy and carbon in construction projects.
Rachel contributes to White Design’s research strategy and co-ordinates regular meetings for our team of internal research co-ordinators.

Luke gained 14 years’ experience in architectural practice before joining White Design in 2009. Luke has delivered new build and refurbishment projects of varying sizes, working primarily in the arts and commercial sectors and has experience in designing sympathetic and contemporary interventions in sensitive locations such as listed building curtilages.
At White Design, Luke is the project architect for Watermead Visitor Centre in Leicestershire and a new hospitality and catering facility for St Katherine’s School, North Somerset.

Sophie is a qualified accounting technician and is studying towards her ACCA professional qualifications. Sophie worked as an accounts manager in the pensions and marketing sector before joining White Design in 2009 to support the day-to-day operations of the practice’s finance department.

Louise is a graduate of Sheffield University and gained her early professional experience in the UK and Portugal. She has a strong interest in health and the built environment and is keen to ensure that the well-being of occupants is a priority in her design work.
Louise was part of the design team which transformed an industrial shed on Bristol’s harbourside into Bordeaux Quay, an organic brasserie and deli. Louise runs a number of research initiatives within White Design, ensuring the practice stays at the cutting edge of sustainable design.

Frances gained an MSc in Theory and Practice of Sustainable Design at Cardiff University before joining White Design in 2008. France’s prior experience included a community church, domestic renovations and new build projects, as well as contributing to the final phase of the Wales Millennium Centre.
She is now completing her professional practice and managerment qualifications while leading on the design for Ynysowen primary school in Aberfan, South Wales. Frances brings brings a strong interest in whole life costing and the impact of materials specification to her role.

In her role as office administrator, Stephanie is responsible for the smooth running of the practice’s central resources. Working closely with the PA to the Directors, she provides ‘front-of-house’ telephone and visitor reception duties, co-ordinating meetings and providing administrative support to the wider team, particularly on HR, communications and outreach matters.
Before joining White Design in 2008, Stephanie gained experience in publishing, graphic design and customer service.
Russell is a freelance consultant with 25 years’ experience helping businesses, charities and individuals with information technology. Initially trained as an electronics design engineer, Russell worked as a programmer and systems administrator before launching his own IT support consultancy 3 years ago.
At White Design, Russell undertakes the role of Network Infrastructure Consultant, working closely with the team at strategic and practical levels to ensure our IT systems are appropriately resourced and consistently supported.
Elly joined White Design in 2005 and completed her professional practice and management qualifications while working on a number of award-winning projects. She was part of the design team for the Dalby Forest Visitor Centre as well as project leader for Rogiet primary school and Woodpecker eco-house.
Building on an early specialism in the relationship between architecture and sculpture, Elly has a keen interest in design, aesthetics and composition and is particularly aware of how buildings affect the people who live or work in them - a philosophy which informs her sensitive approach to building design.

Andrew originally studied ceramics and spent some years teaching and exhibiting throughout the UK before entering architecture. He continued to explore architectural themes related to his art practice while preparing his Masters degree at the Welsh School of Architecture, including traditional construction techniques and the use of pattern and ornamentation of form in design.
Since joining White Design in 2005, Andrew has worked on visitor centres and schools and is the design team leader for Dartington school in Devon, which is aiming to be the UK’s first “zero carbon” primary and community school.

Laurie is an architectural technician with extensive experience of computer aided design and building regulations. Laurie’s work in the health sector has involved the preparation of detailed construction drawings for health centres, nursing homes and specialist hospital wards. In the housing and leisure sectors, Laurie has worked on projects ranging from a ski school in France to a large development of luxury apartments in London.

Ruth completed her Part 1 architectural qualification at the University of Brighton and studied an MSc in Architecture: Advanced Environment and Energy at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth before continuing her Part 2 studies at Cardiff University which she will complete in 2010.
Ruth has a strong interest in regenerative community projects and spent several months working on a town regeneration project for a UNESCO world heritage site in Havana, Cuba.

Joe’s qualifications are in the disciplines of architecture and planning. He is a chartered town planner and is working towards his professional and management qualifications in architecture.
Before joining White Design, Joe gained experience in a major planning and design consultancy, where he worked on a number of large scale masterplans and planning applications.
Joe enjoys facilitating public consultation events and his special interest is in the different approaches to weaving together existing and proposed new areas of development.

Linda founded White Design with fellow director Craig White in 1998. She has particular responsibility for sustainability consultancy, environmental policy, business development, programme management, quality assurance and research.
Linda has extensive experience of working at national and European level n developing and implementing environmental legislation and policy.
Drawing on her MSc in corporate social responsibility, Linda offers consultancy advice on brief development and integration of sustainable development and environmental policy into clients’ day-to-day operations.
Linda is vice-chair of Creating Excellence, the South West’s centre for excellence in sustainable communities, a steering group member of the South West design review panel and is a contributor to the South West panel on climate change impact and construction (SWCCIP).

As Business Process Advisor, Miles leads White Design’s process delivery, including new work process, workload management and client-facing processes. A graduate in business administration, Miles also takes responsibility for quality management, data security and health and safety matters within the practice.
Before joining us in 2008, Miles was Project Manager and Client Representative for the Archimedia project to develop a new home for the Knowle West Media Centre in Bristol, successfully fundraising £3.6M over 4 years.

Tim studied architecture in Manchester and Bristol, before joining White Design in June 2009. He brings over four years of experience, previously working for an international multi-disciplinary practice, and then a small but highly regarded design studio specialising in environmentally responsive architecture with a specialism in housing and community work.
His interests include sustainable city design, the rehabilitation of buildings and the importance of ‘play’ within architecture, which was the basis of his thesis project for his Bachelor of Architecture degree which he has just completed with distinction.


Matthew studied Eco Design at Goldsmiths University of London and has worked in the UK and the USA as a building designer-maker and teacher of craft skills and design.
Matthew has extensive experience of working with computers, both in the practical sense of troubleshooting and repair, as well as more creative applications for art and design projects. He combines his practical knowledge of operating systems with his art and graphic skills to produce websites and promotional material using a variety of media.

Matt has extensive experience in two areas of White Design’s activity. His design team leadership and construction management experience is demonstrated in his design for Torfaen County Borough Council’s Eco office, using straw bale technology. Matt is also the practice’s Project Lead Consultant, overseeing all our consultancy work.
Matt’s work in project-managing the Sustainable Design Code for the Ely Bridge scheme in Cardiff has led to a strategic policy advisory role to assist the Welsh Assembly Government in developing a Sustainable Buildings Policy for Wales.

A graduate of the Welsh School of Architecture, Nick joined the practice in 2003 and is now a senior architect overseeing a number of schemes, including the £12M John Ferneley secondary school in Leicestershire.
During a year spent in practice in Malaysia, Nick developed a keen interest in the concept of regionalism and a critical awareness of designing in response to locality and climate, an approach which continues to inform his work today.

Before joining White Design, Pat had more than 20 years experience as an HR professional and Trainer in addition to managing small and large teams. A Chartered Member of the Institute of Personnel and Development Pat is the Human Resources Advisor for the practice. She supports the directors and staff by providing advice and guidance on human resources issues, developing HR policies and processes and identifying opportunities for individual and team skills and knowledge development.

After graduating from Liverpool University, Karl developed his interest in sustainable architecture through a PhD in Sustainable City Design, developing a support framework for low energy, self-build/participative housing - a continuing interest which influences his approach to all architectural projects.
Karl brings over 10 years’ experience to his role as a Project Architect at White Design where he has led several residential, office, retail and mixed-use schemes since joining us in 2006. He is now Project Architect for the practice’s most significant commission to date, the Oxford Academy.

Claire graduated in architecture and planning at the University of the West of England, where she curated the fourth year summer show in 2009. Claire’s final project was an underground perfumery in a sensitive historical setting. An earlier project looked at increasing population density in city suburbs and was selected for an exhibition at the Architecture Centre, Bristol in 2008.

John qualified in Architecture and Planning at the University of the West of England in 2008.
He has had a range of experience in engineering, planning and small and large architectural practices and has undertaken a number of courses at the Centre for Alternative Technology, Machynlleth.
Before joining White Design, John worked on the winning entry for the Lawrenny sustainable village competition. He is now part of the team involved in the ongoing research and commercial development of a revolutionary new form of low carbon prefabricated construction.

After gaining his BSc in architecture, Jonny spent 3 years working as an environmental consultant for a firm of architects in Devon. His projects ranged from a “zero carbon” farmhouse conversion to a £5m Eco-Hotel on the north Cornwall coast.
Jonny is combining his project work at White Design with the next stage of his architectural qualifications (part 2), by pursuing a Professional Diploma in Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies at the Centre for Alternative Technology, Machynlleth.

Following her diploma from Sheffield University, Calah gained her professional practice and management qualifiication before joining White Design in 2008. Her prior experience covers a range of new build and conversion projects of all sizes, ranging from a secondary school to a sea-front cafe.
Calah has a strong interest in community and user involvement in the design of building projects. She also enjoys incorporating arts and sculptural opportunities into schemes and incorporating these into the surrounding landscape.

Paul studied architecture in Manchester and joined White Design in 2009, bringing 12 years’ professional experience to the practice. Paul has worked extensively in the housing, office and retail sectors and has a particular interest in the sensitive remodelling of urban environments particularly where they include listed buildings.
He enjoys all aspects of the architectural process - from initial environmental analysis and building regulations strategies, through design development with the client, to construction information and contract management.

Anna is continuing her RIBA Part 2 architectural qualification at the Welsh School of Architecture, while contributing to a number of projects at White Design. Anna’s university projects included an urban masterplanning scheme in Hackney and a maternity and respite centre in Venice. Anna brings an interest in art, model-making and photography to her architectural work.

Louisa studied design at Napier University in Edinburgh and Bioclimatic Architecture in Portsmouth before joining White Design in August 2009 bringing 12 years of professional experience in architecture practice.
Louisa has worked on masterplanning projects in urban locations in London and the South West. She has latterly focussed on urban extension and design coding in suburban areas and is now working on consultancy and urban design projects at White Design.


Chris studied at the Welsh School of Architecture, followed by Part 3 at UCE in Birmingham. Before joining White Design in 2009 he worked in architectural practices in Truro and Bath. His project experience has been largely in the education sector, including three high schools, a joint public/university library, a sixth-form college and teacher training centre. Chris brings an interest in local and global contexts to his role as part of the design team for Oxford Academy.

A graduate of the Welsh School of Architecture, Luke completed his professional education at Westminster before joining White Design in 2008. In his previous roles, Luke worked on several high-profile education and leisure projects including a ‘multi generation’ school campus in Bristol.
At White Design, Luke was part of the team which designed the competition-winning Watermead Visitor Centre. He is currently part of the design team for John Ferneley secondary school in Leicestershire.
Haf obtained a distinction for her Masters thesis on zero energy design at the Welsh School of Architecure in 1998. Following a period working on WWF’s One Million Sustainable Homes in Wales, she was appointed Gwalia Housing’s first Sustainability Officer, pioneering research and putting into practice new methods of construction.
As an accredited EcoHomes and Code for Sustainable Homes assessor, Haf has practical experience of the challenges of delivering good design in construction, while also being aware of the wider sustainability issues.
Haf joins White Design as Research Fellow in a collaborative venture with the University of the West of England. One of the aims will be identifying areas of synergy between academic research and architectural practice to inform the change required to achieve more sustainable communities.

Tim undertook his architectural education at the Welsh School of Architecture and previously worked for Patel Taylor and Niall Phillips Architects before taking up the role of project architect at White Design in 2009.
Tim has developed a specialism in environmentally responsive and contextual new build design and the creative re-use of historic buildings and landscapes. Among his most recent projects are Dillington House residential learning centre for Somerset County Council and the RIBA Award-winning Wolverhampton Art Gallery.

Adriana studied architecture in Colombia and Switzerland before joining White Design in 2005 where she is working towards the British equivalent of her professional qualifications.
With a research specialism in timber design and construction, Adriana was the curator of ‘Timber Talent South West’, an exhibition commissioned by the Centre for Contemporary Arts and the Natural World (CCANW) in 2008; she was also the lead designer for the award-winning Stanpit Marsh Visitor Centre in Dorset.

A graduate in architecture and planning, Till joined the practice in 2005 after completing his professional training. Till contributed to the Dove Lane development framework in Bristol and has been project architect for several primary schools in Wales. He is now the project architect for the 55-hectare National Wildlife Conservation Park in Bristol.
Till’s IT knowledge has helped the practice develop interactive web-based tools as part of our community consultation processes.

Christine is currently studying for an MSc in the Theory and Practice of Sustainable Design at the Welsh School of Architecture, preparing a dissertation on the retrofitting of Victorian terraced houses.
Since joining the practice in 2008, Christine has played a major role in White Design’s new work process and she is now developing a new work tool kit to aid the practice’s tendering process.
Jan’s early career was in art teaching in the secondary sector before she decided to study landscape architecture, gaining a Masters degree at Sheffield University. She is currently working towards the Landscape Institute’s Chartership examination.
Through her experience in designing school grounds, play areas and parks, Jan has developed a particular interest in how sensory perception influences our experience of spaces and places. She also brings to her design thinking an understanding of the power of colour to transform space and affect behaviour.

Steve trained as an engineer and then studied for an MBA before embarking on his architectural career. A graduate Architectural Technologist, Steve is working on a number of Education projects whilst studying for further architectural qualifications.
Steve has previous experience of large scale planning applications and also developed a design code as part of a design and access statement for a 5000 unit residential master plan. He also has extensive knowledge of ModCell prefabricated straw bale panels.

Helen’s role as practice accountant began in 2006, when she brought her experience in a diverse range of industries to White Design. Having qualified as an accountant in 1997, Helen previously managed finance departments in organisations ranging from engineering to media and telecommunications.
Helen’s main focus is to maintain the integrity of the finance function and develop management reporting and forecasting in line with the company’s business strategy.

Anna graduated from Sheffield University with a joint honours degree in landscape design and ecology followed by a diploma in landscape architecture. She now brings over seven years’ experience to her role as a landscape architect at White Design.
Anna has experience of designing in sensitive, historic and socially challenging settings and enjoys facilitating community consultation events. Anna’s work is enriched by her personal interest in the culture and arts of different countries and a passion for exploring colour.

Before joining White Design in 2007, Mary had 15 years' experience in the field of architecture, as Director of the Royal Society of Architects in Wales and as Chief Executive of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland. She was made an Honorary Fellow of the RIBA in 2002.
As Development Advisor, Mary leads the practice’s marketing and outreach strategy and supports the directors in developing key personnel and business processes.

Samantha originally trained as a 3D designer in products, interiors and furniture before pursuing her architectural career. She has extensive experience of developing the concept and design strategy for a range of educational projects as well as project-managing major residential and mixed-use developments in London and the South-East.
One of Samantha’s earliest and continuing interests is sustainable urban development. She also brings to her role as Project Architect at White Design experience of planning and development on sensitive sites, design of affordable homes, design for people with long-term disabilities and master planning.
