Danby Cottage
The design for this single storey extension in the Forest of Dean was developed in close partnership with the clients, Gareth and Jill Lawes, and the contractor, Greenheart Design and Build. The aim shared by everyone was to satisfy a need for accessibility in an environmentally conscious manner.
The primary purpose of the commission was to provide a flexible and fully inclusive space, re-working the interior of the existing cottage and extending the usable living area at ground floor in a manner that would enable full wheelchair access throughout.
The extension is a timber frame construction which is highly insulated with recycled newspaper and finished with a lime based render. The new living room provides an additional 40m2 of area and is linked to the original cottage via openings in the old gable wall. The elevation to the garden takes full advantage of the views across the garden and to the forest beyond, and the living space extends out onto a timber deck, through full-width sliding and folding doors.
