National Wildlife
Conservation Park

The NWCP, located to the north-east of Bristol city centre, is a pioneering development by Bristol Zoo Gardens. It aims to be a world class visitor attraction that combines an exciting, interactive experience with the more serious messages of conservation and sustainability. As a conservation-led wildlife park, it will champion and support national and international conservation, demonstrate and encourage widespread sustainability and actively engage visitors in a wide range of animal and plant conservation projects.

The architecture of the park is designed to be ‘submissive’ to the animals and the wildlife on display, allowing a degree of flexibility according to the animals’ changing needs. NWCP is the first zoo in the world to be designed, constructed and operated in a wholly sustainable way, from power generation and waste management to local procurement and carbon sequestration.

The design of all exhibits has taken into account a number of important ‘layers’ that generate a successful proposal with regard to:

- sustainable and environmental principles
- the existing environment and ecology
- the quality of visitor experience
- the quality of animal experience (animal husbandry)
- the logistics and practicality of zoo life
- safety of visitors, staff and animals

The design aims to create different ecosystems within South Gloucestershire and still allow for a sense of immersion for visitors. These moments have been created in a similar way to theatre set design, by controlling vistas through the use of purposefully placed structures, hard landscaping and soft landscaping. Each exhibit portrays a theme throughout the design that correlates to the essence of each ecosystem conservation message.
