VELUX marketing and training centre

Completed in December 2001, the complex is VELUX UK’s sales and marketing office, public visitor and education centre. The client wanted a showcase for VELUX products in an inspirational setting which would become “the most photographed roof in Europe.”

White Design’s response was to create two complementary roof forms constructed from a glue laminated timber framework. The south facing roof, an elegant concave sweep of blue-green natural slate tiles, is visible from all approaches and houses an array of VELUX windows. The convex north roof is “muscular” in character, clad in cedar shingles, and acts as the primary means for daylight to enter the building. Natural ventilation and maximum use of daylight ensure user comfort and contribute to environmental gains, as well as user productivity.

The building was given demonstration project status in the government’s Movement for Innovation (M4I) programme, with an outstanding score of 85% against the assessment criteria.
